SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) – Oakland city officials are facing a federal judge’s deadline to submit a plan on how it will complete investigations into how the police department handled last fall’s Occupy protests.
U.S. District Judge Thelton Henderson issued the order last week to see how police will complete the investigations within a year.
Henderson’s order came after a monitor assigned to track department reforms released a report critical of its progress in making improvements under a 2003 police misconduct settlement. The report cited the “overwhelming military-type response” to the Occupy protests.
City leaders said police lack the manpower to investigate the more than 1,000 complaints stemming from the protests and will contract out the probes.
The city has not yet hired any firms to conduct the investigations.
